One man can see a lot in his lifetime, but Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) is definitely a man who's seen it all. The Butler is a compelling historical drama that details the life of African-American White House butler Cecil Gaines and his life during his 34-year service at the US presidential residence. Raised on a cotton farm in Georgia, the young Cecil Gaines' childhood is wrought with anguish and despair, but he eventually finds himself in the service of some of the world's most important leaders. As Cecil serves under Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Reagan, he witnesses some of the biggest and most dramatic events in the 20th Century, all the while trying to fight adversity and keep his family together. Loosely based on the life of Eugene Allen, The Butler gives insight into some of the United States most challenging periods, including the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.
