Who knew that a historical drama could be as fascinating as The Last Station is? Then again, theres nothing like a couple of fine actors such as James McAvoy and Helen Mirren to elevate a flick to another level. Set at the beginning of the 20th Century, Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) is the most respected writer of his time thanks to Anna Karenina. Youd think that would make his wife, Sofya (Helen Mirren) one proud woman but that would be too simple, wouldnt it? Instead, shes rather envious and at wars with her husbands admirer and close friend, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti). Shes got a theory that the two men are plotting to exclude her from Tolstoys will and when the writers new secretary, Bulgakov (James McAvoy) gets involved, its quite the fiery situation. Yep, it all makes for one epic battle so what does Tolstoy do? He decides to flee the situation by heading south. |
