The Black Balloon
Release date: 24-09-2008
The Black Balloon is the stunning semi-autobiographical debut from Australian filmmaker Elissa Down. A coming of age story with a twist, The Black Balloon follows Thomas Mollison (played by Rhys Wakefield); Thomas and his family have just moved to a new town, a move that is complicated by his mother Maggie’s (Toni Collette) troubled pregnancy, and his brother Charlie’s autism. When Maggie is put on bed rest, it’s left to Thomas to take care of Charlie, who requires constant attention. Already negotiating the difficult transitions of adolescence, Thomas struggles to deal with the responsibilities thrust on him. With the help of his supportive girlfriend Jackie (played by the insanely beautiful Gemma Ward), Thomas navigates the changes in his life, and learns to accept who he is, and the family he loves. Emotionally confronting, intelligent, and humourous, The Black Balloon is a fascinating story, enhanced by stellar performances from Wakefield, Collette and particularly Luke Ford, as the endearing and exasperating Charlie.
